Why Western Red Cedar

Real wood, chosen to handle Chicago weather

Naturally resists rot and insects

Cedar's natural oils help it hold up outdoors without heavy chemical treatment.

Stays straighter

Cedar is less prone to warping and twisting than cheaper woods.

Beautiful either way

Rich color when new, weathering to a soft silver-gray if you let it.

Caring for your cedar

Stain it, or let it silver. Your call.

Weathered cedar photo coming soon

Let it silver

Leave it untreated and cedar weathers to a soft silver-gray patina. It still resists rot either way.

  • Staining is optional. Many homeowners let it weather naturally.
  • If you stain, use a quality exterior stain made for cedar.
  • Re-stain every few years to keep the color.
  • Check once a year for loose boards or hardware, and keep sprinklers and mulch off the boards.

Cedar vs. vinyl, honestly

Cedar costs less upfront and gives you real wood. Here's the trade-off.

Cedar FAQ

Questions homeowners ask about cedar

How long does a cedar fence last?

With care, a Northwest cedar fence is built to last 20+ years. Cedar posts set in concrete and Western Red Cedar boards give it a strong start, and occasional upkeep keeps it going.

Will cedar warp, crack or turn gray?

Western Red Cedar is less prone to warping than cheaper woods, but it's still real wood: expect some natural checking (small surface cracks) as it ages. Left untreated, it weathers to a soft silver-gray. Staining keeps the original color.

Do I have to stain my cedar fence?

No. Staining is optional. Many homeowners let cedar weather naturally to gray, and it still resists rot either way. If you want to keep the fresh cedar color, stain it and re-stain every few years.

What heights can I get, and do I need a permit?

We build cedar fences at 4, 5 and 6 feet. Most Chicagoland towns require a permit and limit backyard fences to 6 feet. Send us your plat survey and we'll handle the permit and paperwork for you.
